Quick Takes Thursday

1. I chopped off 10 inches of hair yesterday. Technically *I* didn't chop it off. I paid someone very well qualified to do the job. It's been a long time since I had a haircut I liked as much. A very looooong time. I'm so happy I took the leap and said goodbye to about 1 pound of hair.
hair cut
A before and after would have been really good here. My hair was down to the middle of my back, and it took a solid 12 minutes to blow it mostly dry.
2. I'm hoping that this hair cut will help me stay motivated to keep exercising.
I've been running (ahem) jogging and working really hard to train for a 5K next month so I can run with my daughter. Hadley loves to run! I'm not willing to be left behind. No sir-ee. Nothing kills my motivation to exercise faster than the realization that I'll have to wash and dry a mop of hair afterward. I already feel happier about getting all sweaty. (2.2 miles is my record so far)

3. Amelia is counting down to her 4th birthday. Yowza.

4. My little sister Lindsay had a baby girl on Wednesday. Un-named baby girl showed up nearly one month early and weighed in at 5lbs 12 oz. She is in perfect health and Lindsay is doing great. The obligatory Auntie Knitting is en route. Glad I finished early! Though she won't be wearing this anytime soon, little peanut that she is!

(This is the Easy Baby Cardigan by Joelle Hoverson, knit in Purewool, color Parisian)
I really love the moss stitch cuffs and this sweater was pure delight to knit.
5. Spring Break is in 10 days including the weekend. I'm pretty sure I need not express my joy on this matter. After spring break we have 7 weeks until summer break. Ditto to the aforementioned joy.
6. We planted most of our seeds last weekend. Spinach, peas, lettuce outside. Tomatoes, Broccoli, squash, zinnias, etc. inside. I have more to plant soon. No big farm this year, I'm focusing on what we have here and we're adding a few more beds.
7. The Mail Man is currently building a chicken mansion in the back yard. It's going to be awesome and we hope to move three chickens in this summer. (It's not really a mansion, but it's nice.) He's doing this for me because I don't think he really cares about getting chickens. Especially considering the fact that we get 1 dozen fresh eggs delivered every Wednesday by one of my piano students. I love that The Mail Man is willing to undertake such a project just for me.
What kind of chickens should we get? We want them to be nice and lay big eggs frequently.
8. I've been reading a lot lately. Well, really listening. I listen as I drive all around being a traveling music teacher and when I'm sitting and knitting. I love listening to books so much more than I ever thought I would.
I recommend:
Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
Not a happy go lucky book, but so incredibly real and what a phenomenal character. At first I didn't think I'd like her, but then I started discussing her with my friend Holli and really thinking about her on a deeper level. I realized this book was truly amazing for it's authenticity.
The Elegance of a Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
I am currently loving this book. It's set in Paris, which would be enough for me to fall in love, but the two main characters are just so great!!! I'll let you know if something changes, but I expect to he happy with this book from beginning to end.

LOVE the new haircut! You look so chic!

Right now I'm reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I'm sure it must come in an audio version since it's a few years old. It's really good and I think you'd like it.

1. I love the haircut. But as you've seen photos of me, you know there's never a haircut I haven't loved. The shorter the better. Now if only my short hair would motivate me to jog. Sunshine is the only thing that works for me.
2. Love chicken mansions!
3. I wish I would have read Olive Kitteridge at the same time as you and Holli. I remember feeling it had a subtle beauty and authenticity but don't think I appreciated it fully.
4. I put down The Elegance of the Hedgehog--got bogged down. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I love my Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorp (ssh...she might be the favorite). They lay well even through the winter. And this list is super helpful for narrowing it down:

Your new "Do" looks wonderful. I wish I could wear my hair that way and look as good.
What a beautiful baby sweater, the color is lovely.
And...hooray for a few chickens. The girls will love having them. We have one Sex Link, at least I am pretty sure that's what she is. Honestly, Heather, she lays the biggest brown eggs I have ever seen and she pretty much lays every day. The eggs are so big that they will hardly fit into an extra large sized egg carton. That's out little Carmen!

Love the do! I'm doing just the opposite - I've grown my out after 10? yrs of it being short - like had to wash it/style it or wear a baseball cap ... I'm loving the pony tale bun thing right now.

Totally excited about your hen house ;-) Can't wait to meet the girls.

Congrats Aunie! Glad all are well - and cute sweater ...

Thanks for the book recommendations - I've been "listening" lately too - it takes the boring (sorta) out of running on the treadmill ... ok - not really but at least I am engaging my mind while I'm killing my legs ;-)

So much to say in this post, Heather.

First off - I LOVE your hair! I think a chin length bob is the most darling little cut on earth. And well done on the 2.2 miles! I'm proud of you.

LOVE the sweater and huge congrats to Lindsay on her new baby girl.

Yay for spring break and chickens in the backyard.

And finally - I've added Hedgehog to my list of "to listen"...
