Little Peeps Are in the House

Four Little Peeps
Two Adoring Peep Mamas
A lot of Peep-y fuzz
So much excitement! Amelia's birthday is tomorrow and since she is the one constantly picking up the chicken books and asking to sit down and read all about them I thought it would be fun to bring them home just in time for her special day. She is over the moon with excitement and pretty certain that we will be getting eggs right away. We ended up ditching the list when we got to the chick store. They didn't have exactly what I wanted, but they did have some good choices, so we went with what they had. Amelia could not bear the thought of leaving without the lil' ladies. We came home with 2 Welsummers, 1 Rhode Island Red, and 1 Maran. They will all be different looking and they all lay brown eggs. The Maran and the Welsummers lay dark chocolate colored eggs and the Red lays light brown. I might need to add and Ameraicana to the bunch for some blue/green eggs, but adding chickens to a flock can be tricky and might not be feasible. All of these breeds are very family friendly and easy to adapt to a backyard setting. We are hoping to get eggs in about 6 months as these little ladies are just one week old.
And just across the room from the Little Peeps are the seedlings. Two weeks old and nearly ready to start transplanting into deeper pots. Some of them are getting too leggy already because I sprouted them under the window instead of under the lights and they were reaching early. I'll pot them deep and they will be just fine.
Lots of life going on at our house! Now we just need some warmer days. It was snowing and hailing yesterday and the tulips aren't even contemplating blooming. Come on Spring!!
We're ready.

How fun! I have been successful at adding hens to a flock as long as it isn't a single hen, I have added 3 at a time usually. They spend a day or two hiding out in the roost but then integrate just fine.

Nothing makes me happier than the sound of little peeps. My "girls" are three years old now and still laying....well, 2 of the 3 are anyway. So no chicks for me this year :(

We've been raising chickens for about two years now. I love fresh eggs, store bought ones don't taste anything like the fresh one!

So CUTE!
